What is lip augmentation?

Nowadays, the procedure of lip augmentation has gained wide popularity. Predominantly, special hyaluronic acid fillers are used for these purposes. Filler injections contain a special natural substance – hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a component of human skin that fills subcutaneous space. It smoothens wrinkles and lines. Removal of wrinkles results in the lips looking fuller and more shapely. Lip fillers enable one not only to increase the lip size, but also to combat dryness.

Hyaluronic acid injections can help improve insufficiencies, deformities or asymmetry of the lips. Lip fillers will serve as an excellent solution, for instance, in the cases, where the contour of the lip is not straight or the upper lip is considerably smaller than the lower lip.

Conduct of lip augmentation procedure

Lip augmentation injections can be performed by medical personnel only – plastic surgeons, dermatologists. Hyaluronic acid containing fillers are injected subcutaneously by means of a fine needle. Upon the evaluation of the anatomical characteristics of the lips, their shape, volume and the desires of the patient, several punctures are made in different places of the lips. The patients can decide themselves what amount of hyaluronic acid will be injected in their lips. Usually it is 0.5 or 1 ml. The larger the amount, the larger the volume of lips will be. After the injection, the injection site is massaged gently and fillers are gently distributed. Usually, the procedure does not cause severe pain, however, prior to the procedure, the injection site can be treated with special cream to reduce the sensitivity of the skin.

The procedure usually only takes a few minutes and the result is visible immediately after the injection. After the injection of the fillers, a minor oedema or haemorrhages may occur on the lips, which will reduce in a few days. The complete result can be observed in 3 to 4 days, when the swelling disappears. Lip augmentation effect will be retained for several months. The duration of effect in every person is very individual. It is determined by the characteristics of the body and the speed of filler decomposition.
